Life Over 50: Five Tips to Stop Fearing Adult Incontinence

By: Barbara Hannah Grufferman, Positive Aging Expert

With age comes wisdom and experience. But, sometimes, that experience can include new and challenging signs of aging that can impact your body and life, like adult incontinence. And, sometimes, when we have these experiences, we bury our heads in the sand, hoping that if we endure something long enough, the problem we’re facing will just go away.

Although bladder leaks should not be considered an inevitable part of aging, bladder sensitivity is quite common., and incontinence should never get in the way of doing the things you love.

To live your life to the fullest and be truly fearless after 50, it’s essential for you to rise up against your fear of bladder leaks and say, “It’s no big deal!”

Here are five ways to be fearless and fabulous regardless of your sensitive bladder:

  1. Visualize how you are not alone.
Picture this: More than 50 percent of older Americans live with urinary incontinence. If you’re feeling isolated or invisible (another big issue for many people over 50, especially women), keep this in mind. You are not alone!
  2. Share how you feel.
Most women don’t want to talk about their overactive bladder, even with their doctors, because they’re too embarrassed. By simply sharing your thoughts – especially the ones that make you the most uncomfortable – with other people who might be going through the experience, it can ease your mind. If you aren’t ready to discuss it with your family or loved ones, consider joining Facebook or online forums like this one and getting involved in online conversations that are specifically geared to those over 50.
  3. Get out of your comfort zone.
How do you know incontinence will hold you back or what you’re capable of doing if you don’t get out there and try? You can always find reasons why not to do something. Instead, focus on all the reasons you should. It’s a mind shift you can apply to all aspects of life.I’ll give you a personal example: In November 2011, I ran in the NYC Marathon to celebrate my 55th birthday. The idea came to me one day when I was out for a run. My body and mind kicked into a perfect meditative rhythm, and at that moment, I had no doubt that I could not only handle the physical endurance that would be required to train for and complete a marathon, but I would embrace it as a symbol of my new-found physical and mental power. I finished in 5 hours and 30 minutes, surpassing my own expectations and beaming with pride for accomplishing something amazing for a person at any age!
  4. Get the right protection.
Before you jump out of you comfort zone, make sure you are prepared and protected properly. Only 11% of women use the right product specifically designed for incontinence. Try new Always Discreet in liners, pads and underwear – an incontinence product based on your individual needs – with incredible protection and odor control.
  5. Embrace your age.
Make this your personal mantra: Don’t fight your age. Embrace it, whatever it is. Again, this doesn’t mean to give up and give in. It is a very powerful concept of letting go of your younger self and embracing and loving your older self. Treat yourself with kindness, respect, and take care of you as you would your children, your family, and your friends. This is your time.

Thanks Barbara. Also I just finished a six-week biofeedback program with a nurse in my doctor’s office that helps you strengthen your lower pelvic muscles so to avoid leakage. Something else to think about.
